Best STEM Summer Camps Near Berwyn & the Mainline, PA
A guide to what to look for in a STEM or robotics summer camp near Berwyn, PA, including what Blast Camp offers students in grades 4-9.
Every spring, parents across the Mainline start the same search: a summer camp that keeps kids engaged with something more substantial than screen time — ideally something that builds real skills. Here’s what to actually look for, and where we fit in.
What separates a good STEM camp from a mediocre one
Not all “STEM camps” are created equal. When evaluating options near Berwyn, Wayne, Devon, or the broader Mainline, PA area, look for:
- Hands-on building, not just worksheets — kids should leave with something they built, not a packet they filled out
- Small group sizes — meaningful mentorship requires low student-to-mentor ratios
- Age-appropriate tools — a 4th grader and a 9th grader need very different equipment and pacing
- Instructors who actually do this — camps run by active robotics competitors bring a different level of relevance than generic seasonal staff
What Blast Camp offers
Blast Camp is our 5-day summer robotics camp for students in grades 4-9, hosted at our workshop at 15 Waterloo Avenue in Berwyn, PA. Students work hands-on with:
- VEX IQ robot kits — an age-appropriate, competition-grade building platform
- 3D printing basics — designing and printing simple functional parts
- Team build challenges — small-group projects that mirror what our older FRC students do
Camp runs Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and is led directly by current Team 10989 members and mentors — not seasonal camp staff learning the material alongside the kids.
Why it’s more than a summer activity
Our inaugural camp in August 2025 served 20 students and generated 300+ volunteer service hours from mentors and older team members. Many campers go on to join our STEM Tutoring program during the school year, and eventually FRC once they reach high school — making Blast Camp the first rung on a multi-year STEM pathway, not a one-off week.
